Being a REALTOR® comes with a great deal of responsibility. There are multiple agencies you report to, each of which support your work in real estate and require you follow varying rules and regulations. Staying in compliance with these rules (and avoiding costly fines!) can be difficult if you don’t know where to locate them.

Here is a breakdown of the different organizations REALTORS® in Idaho interact with and links to their key resources.

National Association of REALTORS® (NAR)

NAR provides members with REALTOR® branding and consumer marketing tools, market research and trade publications, national conferences, and federal advocacy. Visit nar.realtor to learn about these benefits and many, many more.

 Rules and Regulations to Review:

  • REALTOR® Code of Ethics
    • Establishes ethical duties that all REALTORS® agree to follow as a condition of their membership. These duties provide a high level of service and professionalism to clients/customers and are the key factor separating REALTORS® from all other real estate practitioners.
  • Professionalism in Real Estate Practice
    • Provides a concise explanation of the meaning and content of the Code’s articles and standards of practice.
  • NAR Constitution and Bylaws
    • Outlines the bylaws that govern the national association, its committees, leadership, and its relationship with state and local associations.

Idaho Real Estate Commission (IREC)

IREC enforces and administers the real estate license law regulating real estate brokerages in Idaho. The Commission issues real estate licenses, develops and oversees education programs and licensing exams, and investigates complaints and takes disciplinary actions for violations of the license law. The commission has no jurisdiction over civil matters such as contract, commission, or earnest money disputes. It’s also important to note that not all licensees are REALTORS®, so IREC has no jurisdiction over ethics violations, which are handled by the REALTOR® association (BRR members can file ethics complaints and access dispute resolution services through Idaho REALTORS®).
